Harnessing Your Body's Healing Power with Regenerative Medicine

Regenerative medicine describes a groundbreaking shift in treating musculoskeletal conditions. Instead of just managing symptoms, these therapies aim to repair injured tissue and promote natural healing by concentrating and delivering your body’s own powerful healing elements straight to the site of injury. At the Shashikanth Orthopedic Hospital, we offer advanced regenerative treatments, including Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) Therapy and Stem Cell Therapy, to help you recover from injury, reduce pain, and potentially avoid or delay the need for surgery.

Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) Therapy

Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) Therapy

Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) therapy is a therapy that uses a concentration of your own platelets to accelerate the recuperation of injured tendons, ligaments, muscles, and joints. Platelets are a component of your blood that are well-known for their role in clotting, but they are also rich in special proteins called growth factors. These growth factors are crucial for the body's natural healing process, allowing it to reduce inflammation and stimulate tissue repair.

How Does PRP Therapy Work?

PRP therapy is a straightforward, minimally invasive procedure performed right in our clinic.

  1. Blood Draw: A small sample of your blood is drawn from your arm, equivalent to a routine blood test.
  2. Centrifuge Process: The blood model is placed in a device called a centrifuge, which spins at high speed to separate the blood components. This process isolates and concentrates the platelets in the plasma, creating a solution that is five to ten times richer in platelets than normal blood.
  3. Injection: The resulting platelet-rich plasma is then carefully injected directly into the damaged or hurting area, sometimes using ultrasound guidance for precision.

The entire procedure typically takes about an hour. The high concentration of growth factors at the injury site jump-starts and amplifies your body’s natural healing response.

What Conditions Can PRP Treat?

PRP therapy is highly useful for a variety of soft tissue injuries and chronic diseases, especially those that have been slow to heal. It is commonly used for:

  • Chronic Tendon Injuries (Tendonitis), such as Tennis Elbow, Golfer’s Elbow, and Jumper’s Knee
  • Ligament Sprains and Muscle Strains
  • Before to Moderate Osteoarthritis of the knee, hip, or shoulder
  • Partial Rotator Cuff Tears
  • Plantar Fasciitis

Because PRP uses your own blood, the risk of allergic response is extremely low. It is a minimally invasive alternative that can reduce the need for anti-inflammatory medications or more invasive procedures like surgery. After the injection, you may experience some temporary pain and swelling at the site, which is a sign that the healing process has begun. Most patients notice significant progress within a few weeks, with healing continuing for several months.

Stem Cell Therapy

Stem Cell Therapy

Stem cell therapy is a more advanced form of regenerative medicine that uses the body's own "master cells" to repair and restore damaged tissues. Adult stem cells, specifically mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs), are unique because they have the ability to expand into many other types of specialized cells, including cartilage, bone, tendon, and ligament cells. This makes them a powerful tool for treating more significant degenerative conditions and injuries.

How Does Stem Cell Therapy Work?

The procedure involves harvesting, concentrating, and injecting your own stem cells.

  1. Harvesting: Stem cells are typically extracted from your bone marrow. This is a minimally invasive procedure called bone marrow aspiration, where a needle is utilized to draw a sample, usually from the back of your hip bone (pelvis).
  2. Concentration: The bone marrow sample is processed in a centrifuge to separate and concentrate the effective mesenchymal stem cells.
  3. Injection: The concentrated stem cells are then precisely injected into the damaged joint or tissue, often with imaging guidance to ensure accuracy.

Once injected, these stem cells can signal the body’s healing cascade and begin the process of regenerating new, healthy tissue to replace what has been damaged.

What Conditions Can Stem Cell Therapy Treat?

Stem cell therapy is typically recommended for conditions where tissue has degenerated or been significantly damaged, and regeneration is needed. It is particularly effective for:

  • Partial Tendon or Ligament Tears
  • Degenerative Disc Disease in the spine

Like PRP, stem cell therapy uses your own cells, making it a safe procedure with a very low risk of rejection or complications. While the initial recovery may involve a period of rest, the goal is long-term healing and regeneration. Patients often begin to notice progress within a few weeks, but the regenerative process can continue for six months or longer as new tissue is formed. This therapy offers the potential for lasting pain relief and functional improvement, helping many patients delay or avoid major surgery.

Which Treatment is Right for You?

The choice between PRP and stem cell therapy depends on your specific situation and the severity of your injury.
